More often than not, the culprit isn't a complex software glitch, but a worn-out ignition switch hiding right behind the key slot. Big diesel engines shake aggressively, and cheap or automotive-grade switches simply can't handle that constant vibration. Over time, their internal springs lose tension and bounce, creating tiny, invisible voltage drops that starve the engine of power for a split second, causing the entire system to suddenly reset.

Turning the key to the run position completes the circuit to energise the main digital control panel display, engage the electronic speed governor module, power the low-voltage fuel priming lift pump, and supply holding currents to the fuel stop solenoid, prepping the engine completely before the starter motor turns.

Can a broken start switch cause an engine to crank continuously but fail to fire?

Yes, if the internal contact bridge for the run terminal breaks or burns out while the momentary crank terminal stays functional, the engine will turn over energetically because the starter motor is receiving power, but it will never fire up because the fuel valves and electronic governors are starved of electrical current.
